I used Windows Backup for just this purpose recently. Specify The Location Of The System Image REAL geeks don't use Help and Support! It recognizes the external hdd right away and I can access it but I can't figure out how to boot Windows 7 as the primary. I should have looked myself, but I was too lazy.
